Caixa Geral de Depósitos’ representative office in Luxembourg recently organised an event dedicated to analysing financial markets and investment opportunities, in collaboration with EBCLP, through its 4Finance Cluster represented by Cluster Ambassadors Miguel Costa and Custódio Portásio, and with the support of the Embassy of Portugal in Luxembourg. The initiative brought together business leaders, investors, clients and institutional partners, fostering discussion on the challenges facing the international economy and the role of banking in supporting Portuguese communities abroad.

A member of EBCLP since 2025, CGD’s representative office in Luxembourg has taken an increasingly active role in engaging the Portuguese-speaking business community, strengthening ties between Portugal, Luxembourg and their respective economic stakeholders.

The strong institutional representation of Caixa was one of the most notable aspects of the event. The presence of António Valente, Executive Board Member and CFO of CGD, accompanied by Maria de Lurdes Sousa, Head of the Representative Offices Department, Sandra Costeira and Tiago Mergulhão from the Private Banking and Wealth Management Division, and Teresa Veríssimo, Head of Caixa’s representation in Luxembourg, highlighted the strategic importance the Group places on the Portuguese-speaking community living in the Grand Duchy and on its international client network.

During the opening session, the Ambassador of Portugal to Luxembourg highlighted the strength of the economic relationship between the two countries and the role Luxembourg has played as a major investor in Portugal. He also emphasised the growing interest of international markets in the Portuguese economy and the role the financial sector can play in attracting investment to Portugal.

In his address, António Valente placed Caixa’s activities within the context of the longstanding historical relationship between Portugal and its communities around the world. Recalling the institution’s nearly 150-year history, he highlighted the importance of its international presence and the leading position Caixa continues to hold across several segments of the Portuguese market. One example mentioned was mortgage lending, an area in which the institution currently finances one in every three young people who turn to a bank to purchase a home.

The Executive Board Member also highlighted the Group’s international reach, with a presence in 19 countries across four continents and an offering that encompasses retail and commercial banking, investment banking, asset management and real estate activities, among other areas. This network represents an important source of support for Portuguese citizens living abroad and for clients with financial interests across multiple geographies.

The market analysis was presented by the Private Banking and Wealth Management team, represented by Tiago Mergulhão, who shared Caixa’s perspective on the current market environment. Key topics included the European Central Bank’s cautious approach, the role of the US dollar as a safe-haven asset during periods of uncertainty, the energy challenges facing Europe and the opportunities arising from Mario Draghi’s proposals to strengthen European competitiveness.

The event also provided an opportunity to introduce the Caixa Private model, designed for high-net-worth clients. Built around a close relationship with a dedicated Private Banker, the service stands out for its professional, experienced and long-term approach, prioritising solutions tailored to each client’s individual profile and specific objectives.

The offering includes savings, investments, financing, wealth protection and access to an open-architecture investment platform, including global ETFs and thousands of international investment funds. Clients also benefit from ongoing support, regular reports on the performance of their assets and access to specialised financial market insights.

Participants particularly valued Caixa’s commitment to the highest standards of discretion and confidentiality, an essential element in wealth management and in serving private banking clients. Combined with the expertise of its specialists and the Group’s international capabilities, this commitment is one of the distinguishing features of the institution’s Private Banking service.

Caixa’s focus on the Portuguese diaspora was another key topic. The institution maintains representative offices in several countries with significant Portuguese communities, including Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, South Africa and Venezuela. In Luxembourg, where it opened its representative office in 2021, the institution has continued to strengthen the connection between clients living in the Grand Duchy and the services available in Portugal in areas such as investment, real estate, business and retirement planning.

The event concluded with a networking session that provided an opportunity to strengthen connections between business leaders, investors, members of EBCLP and representatives of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, reinforcing their shared objective of fostering economic relations between Portugal and Luxembourg and supporting an increasingly dynamic and influential Portuguese-speaking community.
